January 2023

Welcome Kathy Adams Clark

We are anxious for Spring and Kathy has great ideas for us.  Join us on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 9:30 AM.

Kathy Adams Clark, is a columnist for the Houston Chronicle.  She is the past President of the North American Nature Photography Association.  Kathy is a photographer, naturalist, and teacher.  Her goal as a businesswoman is to promote photography and the natural world through teaching. When people understand photography they can enjoy it for a lifetime. When people experience the natural world they will work to preserve it for future generations.

Every week her photos appear in her husband’s ‘Nature’ column in the Houston Chronicle. Since 1999, Gary’s column has taught readers about the birds, butterflies, and natural world around Houston and the world.

Kathy and her husband Gary live in the Woodlands.  Photography has been her passion since she was a child.  Her world centered around playing outside but as a young adult she morphed into a full-fledge naturalist.  Mentors taught her the names of the birds, butterflies, flowers, trees, and dragonflies.

Come discover how to garden with nature, not against it.

February 2023

Horticultural Manager, Brookwood Community

Welcome Robert Grove

We are ready to get cookin' and get plantin' after the January freeze and Robert is sharing his advice.  Join us on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 9:30 AM.

Robert Grove is a horticulturist with Brookwood Community.  Robert will share his expertise with us on which herbs to grow, harvest and use in our Texas Gardens.

More and more local gardeners are learning that herbs are easy to grow and can add flowers, fragrance and texture to the landscape. Herbs are also vital to flavor many dishes.

Local gardeners can successfully grow a wide variety of herbs, although some,

such as French Tarragon and Lavender, often succumb to our hot, wet summers despite careful culture. When selecting which herbs you want to grow in your garden, consider what you commonly cook with.  Look at the herbs in your kitchen cabinet and start off growing

those types of herbs that are recommended for growing in the Texas Gulf Coast region; there will likely be a diverse range of herbs that fit this bill.

Come find out which herbs are best to plant in your spring garden.

March 2023

A cactus spread out, like a grand affair

Appearing to be such a prickly pear

Living in the heat of the desert's day

This is life, it knows no other way

Living where others wouldn't dare

Growing without much effort or are.

Not all succulents are just Cactus.  Succulents can make you happy.  Join Ann for her talk and knowledge of caring for succulents.

SCGC WORKSHOP: COMPOST with ME!

5 Regent Court

Come and have a tour of the "Survival of the Fittest Gardening", a photo op with the Kitty Cat and how to make

COMPOST.  Simple & Fun!

She who leaves with the most plants or cuttings wins!

Reservations are Required.

Compost is a mixture of ingredients used as plant fertilizer and to improve soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties. It is commonly prepared by decomposing plant and food waste, recycling organic materials, and manure. The resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organisms, such as bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, and fungi. Compost improves soil fertility in gardens, landscaping, horticulture, urban agriculture, and organic farming, reducing dependency on commercial chemical fertilizers.[1] The benefits of compost include providing nutrients to crops as fertilizer, acting as a soil conditioner, increasing the humus or humic acid contents of the soil, and introducing beneficial microbes that help to suppress pathogens in the soil and reduce soil-borne diseases.
