Arbor Day is an internationally recognized day for the planting of trees with the goals of conservation and forestation. National Arbor Day is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April; Texas observes November 2nd as the state-supported version.

Both Sides of the Longview entrance were planted to match the other end of Longview & Country Club.
In addition to re-vamping the Country Club/Longview Entrance in Stafford, these crepe myrtles were planted to commemorate Texas Arbor Day 2020!
A total of 3 crepe murtles were planted in this section of the neighborhood.
The Penny Pines Project was started in 1941 by a San Francisco Sports-Women’s Association. They sent pines to be planted in Trinity Forest in Northern California. The planting costs were covered by the Forest Service Appropriations. At that time seedlings could be purchased for 1 cent each. Approximately 680 trees could be planted in one acre. For $68 ten acres could be purchased and planted. Eventually the funds donated to plant trees, exceeded the funds in the Forestry budget.
In 1964, the original agreement was rewritten to provide funds for the reforestation rather than just seedlings. Over the years, more than a million dollars have been given to the Penny Pines Project buying 27 million seedlings and replanting 88,000 acres and benefiting 42 states and 80 National Forest.
Various clubs in the National Garden Club have donated over $75,000. Many clubs in Texas have donated last year including US! Remember when Dr. Heather White was the speaker at our November meeting? Well…she donated $68 in our club’s name from her personal proceeds of speaking. We then had a motion from the floor to donate another $204 ($68 x 3) to complete the entire (North, South, East, West regions). Annette Deitch and I will be presenting this award to Ginnie Russell after this weather blows out of here.
